It was a complete team breakdown by the Chicago Bears on Sunday. They failed in all phases against the Green Bay Packers. That familiar feeling of ineptitude has fans questioning everything and everybody. That is especially true of quarterback Justin Fields. He is now 0-5 against the Packers and has more interceptions than touchdowns in those games. His constant inability to get the offense on track against them is leading to thoughts that he may not have what it takes to go against the upper echelon of the NFL.
To his credit, Fields isn’t focused on that. He understood his first job was to get the team re-focused on what’s important. Rookie wide receiver Tyler Scott spoke with Adam Rank on The Sick Podcast, where he revealed the quarterback brought the team together and made a speech after the loss. His message was simple. While it was a bad day, it’s still only one game. One game doesn’t define a season. He knows this team is capable of playing far better, himself included. They all needed to keep working, correct their mistakes, and believe in each other.
Justin Fields deserves credit for one thing.
He understands the value of short-term memory. If you linger on mistakes or losses, it’s going to fester for a long time. The Bears quarterback has a good habit of being able to move on quickly. He is instilling that mindset into his teammates. That is why he deserves credit. The guy is a capable leader who understands what is required of him. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Bears come back on Sunday in Tampa Bay and deliver a far better effort across the board. Whether it’s enough to win the game remains to be seen.
The thing is, there were several opportunities to change the momentum against Green Bay. Wide receivers were open. The defense got the Packers into several 3rd and long situations. It’s about finishing plays. Justin Fields understands that. He was the first to take responsibility for his poor performance. Nobody will work harder to fix those issues than him. There are 16 games left to play. A lot can happen. One thing is undeniable, though.
At 5-21 as a starter, his leash is slowly getting shorter. Fields has to start winning some games.
