Cubs Broadcasters Get Blasted for Reaction to Ronald Acuña Jr. Celebration
Right before the Cubs completely blew Wednesday night’s game against the Atlanta Braves, Ronald Acuña Jr. stole second base and became the first player in MLB history to hit 40+ home runs and steal 70+ bases in the same season. At the time, the game was tied 5-5 in the 10th inning and it was momentarily paused as Acuña picked up the base, took off his helmet to salute the fans, who were giving him a standing ovation.
Cubs broadcasters Jon “Boog” Sciambi and Jim Deshaies sounded annoyed at the fact that the game came to a halt, with Sciambi despondently asking, “and we’re really stopping the game for a highlight montage?” Meanwhile, Deshaies added that it was pretty absurd.
Here’s how it sounded on the Marquee Sports Network.
That clip was only 20 seconds long, but the actual length of the delay was closer to 1 minute and 40 seconds before Daniel Palencia and Ozzie Albies engaged once again.
The Cubs lost on the next pitch, dropping their second in a row in Atlanta and falling out of the third Wild Card spot.
Whether or not you agree with Boog and JD, what sucks is that other fans who have seen this video are now going to assume that the Cubs broadcasters are the stereotypical “old school” announcers who loath today’s game, when in reality they actually mock that kind of mentality.
On the field, in the TV booth, nothing is going the Cubs way right now.
