1 bettor cashes more than $322,000 after Michigan wins the College Football Playoff
With sports betting now legal in over 35 states in the United States, the bigger games tend to bring out the bigger bets. There were plenty of them in the College Football Playoff semifinals, and several large wagers before Michigan and Washington faced off in the College Football Playoff national championship game.
One bettor at BetMGM was very confident in Michigan winning, wagering $500,000 prior to the game on the Wolverines to win and cover a variety of spreads.
The bettor wagered:
- $200,000 on Michigan ML (-210)
- $100,000 on Michigan -5.5 (-105)
- $50,000 on Michigan -4.5 (-120)
- $50,000 on Michigan -3.5 (-140)
- $50,000 on Michigan -2.5 (-175)
- $50,000 on Michigan -1.5 (-190)
After Michigan jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter, and a 17-3 lead in the second quarter, it looked like it might be a sweat-free night for the bettor. But Washington hung around, closing the gap to 20-13 entering the fourth quarter.
The Huskies could never get over the hump, though, and the Wolverines pulled away late to win 34-13 for their first national championship since 1997.
Since Michigan easily covered the original spread of -5.5, the bettor would’ve made more money simply adding to his wagers at Michigan -5.5 (or adding alternate higher lines at plus money). But it’s also hard to argue with the results.
The bettor took home a little more than $322,000 in winnings.
