Everybody who covers college football and the NFL draft has stated it’s their firm belief the Chicago Bears will take a quarterback with the #1 pick. While Justin Fields has done everything he can to keep the job, it hasn’t been enough. His contract is almost to a point where it will get way more expensive. Rather than force him to start over with a third offensive coordinator in four years, it is best to start over at the position. If they choose that course, most believe Caleb Williams of USC is the most obvious pick.
If that were the case, one would think the Bears would target an offensive coordinator who is equipped to get the most out of Williams. Their candidates thus far aren’t bad ones. Shane Waldron, Klint Kubiak, Liam Coen, and Greg Roman all have proven track records. However, college insider Bruce Feldman feels Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus aren’t looking at the guy who makes the most sense. He spoke on The Rich Eisen Show about the situation. In his mind, the hire should be obvious if Williams is the guy.
Why did it take potential 1st overall pick Caleb Williams so long to declare for the NFL Draft? Is he headed to Chicago with a potential interesting Offensive Coordinator candidate? ???? #nfl#nfldraft#chicagobears#calebwilliams
Kliff Kingsbury and Caleb Williams would be a bold move.
People will scoff at the idea because of how things ended for the coach in Arizona. That is understandable. However, he wouldn’t be coming here as a head coach. In reality, Kingsbury is a proven offensive mind at both the college at pro levels. He produced a top-20 offense three times between 2015 and 2018 while head coach at Texas Tech. He had the 6th-best offense in 2020 and 8th-best in 2021 while in Arizona. Even before that, he delivered the #1 offense in the entire country during his final year at Houston.
One common theme with Kingsbury is he gets the most from his quarterbacks. Case Keenum threw for over 5,600 yards and 48 touchdowns for the Cougars in 2011. Patrick Mahomes set every passing record at Texas Tech under his watch. Kyler Murray made two Pro Bowls. Care to know which two QBs Caleb Williams is most often compared to?
Murray and Mahomes.
His style of play fits the system Kingsbury has run during his career. If the Bears wanted to do everything necessary to make their young QB comfortable, then Feldman is correct. That is a phone call you should make.
