The Chicago Bears QB Plan Might Involve An Unexpected Twist

Truth be told, nobody is entirely sure what the Chicago Bears will do at quarterback. The working theory among most insiders is they plan to trade Justin Fields and select their preferred QB at #1 overall. Almost everybody believes that QB will be Caleb Williams. It makes sense. GM Ryan Poles likely wants to draft his own quarterback. He gave Fields two years to show he was true franchise material. It didn’t happen. Such opportunities like this don’t come around often. The Bears feel this is their time to strike.

One interesting wrinkle in this situation is if they do plan to draft Williams, will they play him immediately? Keep in mind Poles came from Kansas City. When they drafted Patrick Mahomes, whom Williams is often compared to, they sat him behind veteran Alex Smith for a year to learn the pro game. It worked out pretty well for the Chiefs. Maybe the Bears GM hopes to try something similar. That would be the only thing to explain the latest rumor to pop up courtesy of NFL Notifications.

The seven-time Pro Bowler is expected to get released by Denver before the new league year begins in March. He will be free to sign elsewhere at that point. Russell Wilson worked with Shane Waldron in 2021. It was a brief but productive partnership. Despite missing three games with a hand injury, the quarterback still threw for over 3,000 yards, 25 touchdowns, and six interceptions. While he may not be the player he was a few years ago, Wilson may still have some good play left in the tank. Many people see 2024 as a must-win season for the Bears, especially head coach Matt Eberflus. Signing Wilson would likely give Chicago a better chance than a rookie quarterback.

As always, it likely comes down to the contract. Would Wilson be willing to sign a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears? That feels unlikely since there is certain to be at least some interest from other teams. Then again, his two down years in Denver may have hurt his value. Chicago might present an opportunity for him to re-establish his reputation, joining a talented offense with a play caller he knows. It is unlikely, but the idea isn’t completely outlandish.
