Why Christopher Nolan's Oscar wins matter (in general, and to me)
It’s weird to be emotional about watching a person you don’t know win an award, but that’s what happens when you love movies.
As an exhausted Atlanta Falcons fan, watching Christopher Nolan win Best Director at the 96th Oscars is as close as I’ll get to watching something as joyous as a Super Bowl victory any time soon.
At the risk of this coming off as a “How can I make this thing about me?” type of rumination, let’s talk first about why it matters that Nolan won his first two Academy Awards for Oppenheimer on Sunday night.
Nolan is one of the few household name filmmakers who can walk into a studio and basically make whatever he wants with a blank check. Memento established him as an auteur in the making, and The Dark Knight skyrocketed him into a director celebrity status that only happens every so often.
