‘Never been the most talented fighter’: Robert Garcia discusses Berlanga’s KO loss and more
Robert Garcia says he has to give credit to Berlanga for talking himself into a position his skill didn’t merit.
Trainer Robert Garcia spent some time talking to Fight Hub TV about the results of Edgar Berlanga’s fight against Hamzah Sheeraz while also touching on where Canelo is at in his career along with providing some info on some of his other fighters staying busy as they await for their next fights to be scheduled. Check out some excerpts below.
On Berlanga’s knockout loss to Sheeraz
“When it comes to Berlanga I think they did a good job with him in the first 15, 16 fights, all in the first round, built up his name. Berlanga has never been the most talented fighter out there but look, his power and his mouth — ‘cause he knows how to talk — got him to fight Canelo and make a lot of money. His last fight against Sheeraz made him a lot of money.
“There’s still a few fights out there he could do, might not win, but he could still do and get paid a lot of money. So I got to give him credit for doing what he’s done...He’ll probably never be world champion but he’s made more money than a lot of champions.”
On why Canelo wasn’t able to KO Berlanga
“It’s just Canelo doesn’t go for the knockout anymore...we’ve seen in the last few fights he does just enough to win. He did the same to Munguia, he dropped Munguia but didn’t want to finish him, Charlo, Berlanga. He wants to cruise through fights...he doesn’t go all out because he doesn’t want to finish his body, he knows he still has a few more years and a few big fights where he wants to take care of himself and not punish himself too much. That’s why he hasn’t been able to not those guys out, not because he can’t, he just does enough to win.”
On the status of Vergil Ortiz
“Vergil is back in the gym, staying in shape. Hopefully Golden Boy can figure something out late September, October, November.”
On Raymond Muratalla
“Right now we’re waiting on Top Rank, see what the plans is. Our mandatory is Andy Cruz, if we go straight into Andy Cruz we’re ready for it, too. If we could do a voluntary title defense it wouldnt’ be a bad idea, I would like that too for Raymond, especially in our hometown...There’s nothing right now lined up.
