Watch: Pope Leo XIV Teases Cubs Fans After NLDS Loss

0

The world’s most famous White Sox fan has made headlines once again.

Pope Leo XIV, a Chicagoland native from Dolton who first caught the baseball world’s attention when a clip of him in the crowd at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series resurfaced, is back in the headlines — this time for poking a little fun at Chicago’s crosstown rivals.

During an appearance at the Vatican on Wednesday, someone in the crowd shouted out “Go Cubs!” to him. Pope Leo XIV responded with a smile and a wave before shouting back: “Han perdido! They lost!”

The Cubs were eliminated from the NLDS over the weekend after a tense, five-game series against the Brewers.

This comes after Pope Leo XIV joined in on a White Sox chant as the popemobile passed a group of hometown fans at the Vatican in June. He was also spotted wearing a White Sox cap in St. Peter’s Square, gifted to him by a pair of Red Sox fans.

The White Sox, meanwhile, have been quick to embrace the new pontiff. In June, the team hosted a celebration at Guaranteed Rate Field honoring the Chicago-born pope, an event organized by the Archdiocese of Chicago that even featured a video message from Pope Leo himself. Earlier this year, the ballpark also unveiled a mural paying tribute to the South Side’s most famous fan in the Vatican.
