Austria train collision kills one, injures 22

A fatal train crash on Monday has brought transport to a standstill in Austria.

One woman was killed and 22 were left injured after two passenger trains collided in the southeastern state of Styria. Three children are among the injured.

Dramatic pictures show emergency workers climbing into cars that have had walls ripped off on one side.

Several cars were derailed in the impact.

The crash, involving a EuroCity cross-border train and a regional train, took place just before 1pm CET in Niklasdorf town near Leoben.

The Austrian Federal Railways said on its website : "Due to the severity of the train accident, a rail replacement service has been immediately established."

It added: "The route between Bruck/Mur - Leoben is suspended until further notice."

An investigation into the cause of the crash has been launched.
