Ukraine's claims $2.56 billion victory in Gazprom legal battle

Russian state-owned gas giant Gazprom will have to pay it $2.56 billion after a Swedish court ruled in Ukraine Naftogaz's favor on February 28 in the final stage of a long-running legal battle.

The latest ruling concludes the legal dispute and dealt with Naftogaz's claims that it was owed compensation for Gazprom not sending a certain amount of gas annually via Ukraine and paying too little for the gas that did transit through Ukraine.

On March 1, Gazprom issued a statement saying it disagreed with the court's decision requiring it to pay compensation to Naftogaz, according to Russian state-run news agency TASS.

Gazprom's Deputy Chairman Alexander Medvedev said that the company will not start shipments of natural gas to Ukraine's Naftogaz starting March 1, Russia state-owned RT reported.
