Brazil: Tear gas fired as Sao Paulo teachers protest social security reform
Police fired tear gas as teachers protested against a social security reform project in front of Sao Paulo's city hall on Wednesday.
Municipal teachers have been striking since March 8 against a social security reform project proposed by Sao Paulo prefect Joao Doria, which would entail a raise of civil servant taxes from 11 to at least 14 percent.
The proposal also includes the creation of a supplementary rate which could reach 19 percent.
93 percent of Sao Paulo's municipal schools have been affected by the strike, according to local media.
