DA reviews if Syracuse officer should be charged in arrest of teen at school
The Onondaga County District Attorney's Office is looking into charges against a Syracuse police officer after an arrest of a student at a city high school.
The Syracuse Citizen Review Board ruled Syracuse police officer Vallon Smith used excessive force while arresting a 14-year-old boy in February 2017 at Nottingham High School.
The board, which heard the case last month, also said Smith's police contradicted evidence, according to documents provided to Syracuse.com by the boy's , Liza Acquah.
It is uncommon for the review board to refer a case to the DA's office for possible criminal charges against an officer.
Acquah provided Syracuse.com with surveillance of the arrest in which the teen suffered a fractured elbow and split lip.
