The House of Representatives’ vote happened on Thursday, following a Senate... Читать дальше...

Israeli Soldiers Fire Tear Gas in Bethlehem Amid Angry Protests Over US Jerusalem Declaration. Credit – Facebook/Wael Tqatqa via Storyful

News.com.au

Protests quickly turned to clashes across the West Bank on November 7, as Palestinians responded to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. The step signals a significant concession to Israel and has been widely condemned by international leaders, igniting protests from Turkey to Tunisia. Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem since its annexation in 1967 was not until now recognized internationally with countries keeping their embassies in Tel Aviv. Hamas... Читать дальше...

Rebuilding the Royals on 'Out of the Park Baseball'

Royals Review

It was hard to venture anywhere this past summer and not see or hear questions about the Royals future. It didn't matter if you were watching baseball, listening to baseball or reading about baseball; everywhere you went there were discussions about whether Kansas City should trade their future free agents or ride the wave out and see what happens. Obviously we now know how this story plays out, as the team was contending throughout the summer and the Royals held on to their Eric Hosmer's and Lorenzo Cain's. Читать дальше...

The Problem With Those Shiny New Sportsnet Stats

Pension Plan Puppets

Sportlogiq’s public data, and why it isn’t worth much to us.

A decade after the Fancy Stat Era officially began, at least to judge by most databases, hockey analytics are officially mainstream. While some players, managers, and the Edmonton media may try to fight it, there is a growing acceptance that shot attempts and other data are relevant information.

In fact, we’ve begun to build past the initial stage of Corsi, and we’re seeing more sophisticated analysis around concepts like expected goals... Читать дальше...

Please don't let The Last Jedi be another remake of Empire Strikes Back

The Verge

We’re only a week away from the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it’s becoming clear that in spite of the blockbuster success of The Force Awakens, director Rian Johnson may have an even more difficult task on his hands than J.J. Abrams did in resurrecting the franchise. Because while The Force Awakens was able to rest on its laurels by essentially remixing A New Hope, The Last Jedi has a far more formidable task: it needs to not remake The Empire Strikes Back.

Curse of Osiris won’t save Destiny 2 from players’ unrealistic expectations

The Verge

This week, Bungie released the first expansion to its online-only shooter Destiny 2, called Curse of Osiris. The new content comes at a challenging time for the game, as its vocal and divided player base has hit a fever pitch over the state of the series and whether it can be redeemed. A few months after launch, Destiny 2 is a game that finds itself being pulled in every direction by the many contingents of its community, resulting in diametrically opposed opinions on the game and the direction it should take. What if... Jeff Cassar wasn’t fired?

RSL Soapbox

Could Cassar have guided RSL to a playoff place after all?

You have to go back 10 years to find the last time Real Salt Lake fired a coach in the middle of a season, to May 3rd, 2007 to the resignation of John Ellinger, the inaugural RSL head coach.

After two-and-a-bit years in the driving seat at Real Salt Lake, Ellinger was replaced by Jason Kreis, who would go on to give RSL their only MLS Cup win, taking an expansion side and writing the blueprint for success with his tactical play, man management and desire to win. Читать дальше...

How a Democracy Dies

The New Republic

We tend to think of democracies dying at the hands of men with guns. During the Cold War, coups d’etat accounted for nearly three out of every four democratic breakdowns. Military coups toppled Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi in 2013 and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in 2014. In cases like these, democracy dissolves in spectacular fashion. Tanks roll in the streets. The president is imprisoned or shipped off into exile. The constitution is suspended or scrapped.
