Why the A-10 Thunderbolt Might Be America's Best Weapon of War

The National Interest

Kyle Mizokami

Security, North America

Cheap, heavily armed and a cannon for the ages.

One of the most iconic airplanes in the U.S. Air Force’s flying inventory is the A-10 Thunderbolt, also affectionately known as the “Warthog.” Designed to mow down rows of invading Soviet tanks during an anticipated World War III, the A-10 has served in most of America’s post–Cold War conflicts, from the Balkans to Afghanistan. A new Pentagon contract to manufacture new wingsets promises... Читать дальше...

Russia's Su-35 and Su-34 Nuclear Bombers Just Practiced a War with NATO

The National Interest

The big event the media missed—until now.

Just when it seemed that Zapad-2017 was finally moving into the rear-view mirror, it came back to life. Unlike in September 2017, when the whole world was watching (and counter-exercising), this time it passed by virtually unnoticed. Russia has a long history of breaking up its strategic-operational exercises to give its commanders the opportunity to practice General Staff plans in real time and... Читать дальше...

Trump's Trade Wars Could Get Very Ugly

The National Interest

Milton Ezrati

Economics, Americas

Both sides stand ready to inflict considerable pain on the other—even as they talk about talking.

President Trump has started a dangerous game with these tariffs. Rather than use more quiet means to move China from less-than-fair trade practices, he has chosen to play an all or nothing game—or what looks like one. It may yet yield positive results. But China’s leadership is no less afraid of risk than Trump. While willing to talk, it has... Читать дальше...

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Bill Doyle recruited an army of artisans, craftsmen and experts from around the region while restoring 4191 Gilbert St. in Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue neighborhood. “It’s increasingly difficult to find artists who do stuff for this period,” Doyle said of identifying experts capable of recreating classical details for the home built in the early 20th century. “The local artisans deserve so much credit.” Now the home Doyle purchased in 2014 offers an expanded, modern kitchen and newly constructed bathrooms. Is the Trump Administration Sabotaging the Planned Summit with Kim Jong Un?

The National Interest

Doug Bandow

Security, Asia

Pyongyang is unlikely to abandon its nuclear weapons unless it believes that the regime would survive the aftermath.

President Donald Trump is set to meet North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un. The summit looks more serious after the latter’s surprise visit to China. It was Kim’s first meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping. That would not have happened if Kim and especially Xi were not taking the prospect of negotiations with America seriously. Amazon ignores Trump’s threats, expands lobbying efforts

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

WASHINGTON — Online retail giant Amazon is ignoring Donald Trump’s barrage of taunts and threats, focusing instead on expanding its reach into industries that the president’s broadsides haven’t come close to hitting. Trump has hurled one charge after another at the company over the last week. He’s assailed Amazon’s contract with the U.S. Postal Service, accused the company of not paying enough taxes, and declared that its large lobbying operation gives it an unfair advantage. Much of this isn’t new for Trump... Читать дальше...
