US–European satellite will make world's first global freshwater survey

Phys.org

Water is life, but for all its importance, humanity has a surprisingly limited view of Earth's freshwater bodies. Researchers have reliable water level measurements for only a few thousand lakes around the world, and little to no data on some of the planet's important river systems. The upcoming Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite will fill that enormous gap. By helping to provide a better understanding of Earth's water cycle, it will both aid in better management of water resources... Читать дальше...

Extending evacuation options to shelters outside cities can help increase efficiency of flood responses

Phys.org

Scientists from the Division of Policy and Planning Sciences at the University of Tsukuba studied ways to make flood evacuations more efficient by allowing for routes that cross municipal boundaries. They estimate that the nearest shelter for 24% of citizens in Japan are actually located in another city, and that optimizing response plans this way can reduce evacuation time by 14%. This work may significantly improve public safety and overall preparedness for natural disasters.

Bacterial community signatures reveal how cities urbanize water sources

Phys.org

In a study published today in the journal Science of the Total Environment, led by scientists from the Leibniz Institute for Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW), bacterial communities were examined in urban water bodies and wastewater in Berlin and compared to less anthropogenically influenced lakes from surrounding rural regions.

Landsat legacy: NASA–USGS program observing Earth from space turns 50

Phys.org

On a warm July day in 1972, NASA launched a new Earth-imaging satellite called the Earth Resources Technology Satellite. "ERTS" was the first satellite of what later became NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey's Landsat Program, an ambitious effort with a vision of documenting the entirety of Earth from space. The first Landsat was so successful it led to a series of satellites that have created the longest contiguous record of Earth's surface from a space-eye view—that continues growing to this day, 50 years later.

Maruti Suzuki ups the SUV game with the launch of Grand Vitara

Economictimes.indiatimes.com

The mid-SUV segment grew by 8% annually over the past five years compared with 1% growth for the total PV segment. Maruti Suzuki’s exposure to the mid-SUV bracket has so far been limited even as some of the peers boast of waiting periods of 3-9 months for their respective models.

Some asteroids 'aged early' by sun, NASA finds

Phys.org

Scientists from NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission recently learned that surface regeneration happens a lot quicker on asteroids than on Earth. By analyzing rock fractures on asteroid Bennu from high-resolution images taken by the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft, the team discovered that the Sun's heat fractures rocks on Bennu in just 10,000 to 100,000 years. This information will help scientists estimate how long it takes boulders on asteroids like Bennu to break down into smaller particles, which may either eject into space or stay on the asteroid's surface.
