[SAU Bees] St. Ambrose again leads the NAIA with 24 Scholar-Teams
NAIA National Awards Day Recipients
For the fifth straight year, St. Ambrose led the country in number of NAIA Scholar-Teams. This time, for the 2020-21 academic year, St. Ambrose had 24 programs earn the distinction, a number matched only by Grand View University. To earn the honor, programs must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better.
Three other Fighting Bee programs - athletic bands, men's bowling and women's bowling - had qualifying GPAs but do not compete in the NAIA so were ineligible for the recognition.
The St. Ambrose football team's GPA of 3.26 was the second-highest mark among all NAIA football programs. The SAU men's lacrosse (fourth with a 3.15), men's swimming & diving (fifth with a 3.36), women's indoor track & field (sixth with a 3.65) and women's basketball (10th with a 3.71) teams were among the top-10 GPAs in their respective sports. The women's basketball and women's cross country teams had the highest team GPAs in the Fighting Bee athletic department, both posting marks of 3.71.
The NAIA also announced that 199 St. Ambrose student-athletes were named Scholar-Athletes. To be eligible, individuals must have reached at least sophomore status and have a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better.
The cumulative St. Ambrose varsity student-athlete GPA for the 2020-21 academic year was a 3.29.
