GQ 2021년 말부터 갤럭시 유저가 된 모습이 포착됐는데요. 손흥민과 갤럭시와의 만남은 손흥민 선수가 먼저 요청한 것이었다고요.
HM 2년 전에 갤럭시 톰 브라운 에디션을 갖고 싶었는데 삼성에서 도움을 주셔서 어렵게 구할 수 있었고, 그 이후에 삼성에서 메종 마르지엘라 에디션을 선물로 주시더라고요.
GQ 둘 다 럭셔리 패션 협업이네요. 평소 모바일 기기를 선택할 때 디자인을 많이 고려한다는 의미일까요?
HM 저는 필드 위에서의 모습만큼 필드 밖에서의 모습도 중요하다고 생각하거든요. 거기엔 당연히 제게 어울리는 모습을 고민하고 갖춰 나가는 것도 포함되고요. 그런 만큼 제가 늘 들고 다니는 전자 제품도 저를 표현할 수 있는 하나의 방식이 될 수 있는 것 같아요. 축구선수라고 해서 항상 스포티한 모습만 보여줄 필요는 없다고 생각해서요. 그래서 톰 브라운과 메종 마르지엘라 에디션도 재밌게 써봤죠.
GQ 옷으로 표현하자면 두 제품은 어떤 스타일이었어요?
HM 저는 패션이나 일상 아이템을 고를 때 심플한 것을 좋아하는데요. 톰 브라운과 메종 마르지엘라 에디션이 딱 그랬어요. 브랜드 고유의 시그니처가 살아 있으면서도 너무 과하지 않은 디자인이라 저에게 어울리는 것 같아요. 이런 디자인 요소가 더해지니 갤럭시 폴더를 접었을 때 양쪽 커버가 더 멋져 보이죠. 심플하면서도 디테일이 예사롭지 않은 옷처럼요.

GQ 디자인 외에 사용감은 어땠어요?
HM 우선 한 손에 들어와 휴대하기 굉장히 편했어요. 계속 손에 들고 있지 않아도 접어서 테이블 위에 놓고 영상 통화를 할 수 있고, 영상을 볼 때도 편해서 좋더라고요. 무엇보다 플립의 접히는 심플한 디자인이 마음에 들고요.
GQ 새 시스템에 적응기도 필요했겠어요. 갤럭시로 갈아탄 유저의 찐후기 좀 들어볼까요.
HM 제가 생각보다 기계에 능숙하거든요?(웃음) 파일도 제가 직접 옮겼어요, 아주 금방. 큰 어려움 없이 쓱쓱 되던걸요. 갤럭시는 추가로 앱을 설치하거나 파일을 이동하는 게 쉽고 한눈에 유용한 기능도 많은데, 우선 화면 분할로 영상을 보면서 채팅할 수 있는 것도 좋고요. 갤럭시를 쓰면서 매일 쓰는 모바일 제품의 화면과 느낌이 새로워지니까 뭔가 생활이 환기되는 느낌도 들었어요.

GQ 평소엔 어떤 기능을 가장 많이 활용해요?
HM 제가 셀피를 많이 찍지는 않는데, 플립을 접어 세워놓고 사진을 찍기도 하면서 나름 신선하게 활용하고 있어요. 뭔가 동료 선수들이랑 라커룸에서도 재밌게 쓸 수 있을 만한 용도랄까요.
GQ 세리머니로서의 셀피는 많이 찍잖아요.(웃음) 손흥민 선수의 시그니처인 ‘찰칵 세리머니’에 담긴 특별한 의미가 있을까요?
HM 몇 년 전부터 나만의 세리머니를 만들고 싶었는데 어떤 걸 할지 고민을 많이 했어요. 남들이 보기엔 제가 그 장면을 찍는다고 생각할 수 있겠지만, 저는 이골이 마지막이 될 수도 있다는 생각, 소중함, 또 그 행복함을 저 자신한테 캡처로 남기고 싶어서 찰칵 세리머니를 하게 됐어요.

GQ 훈련 외에는 ‘집-훈련-집’ 루틴이 일상의 대부분인 집돌이로 유명하잖아요. 집에서 즐기기 제격인 기능도 찾았나요.
HM 요즘은 모바일기기와 가전제품을 연결하는 이런저런 시도를 해보고 있는데, 쉬는 날엔 거의 집돌이인 제가 집에서 가지고 놀 수 있는 것들이 늘어나서 좋아요.(웃음) 그리고 워치로는 일상에서 제 건강을 스스로 간단하게 체크해 보기도 하고요. 갤럭시를 쓰다 보니, 제품 간 호환 때문에 버즈, 워치, 탭까지 전부 갤럭시로 아예 바꿨습니다.(웃음)
GQ 모바일로 시작해 갤럭시 만렙을 찍었네요. 가장 마음에 드는 제품은 뭐였어요?
HM 갤럭시 플립과 워치. 하루 중에 가장 오랜 시간을 쓰는 제품들이기도 해서요. 플립은 쓰다 보면 굉장히 재밌어요. 제가 접히는 ‘폴더 폰’의 감성과 재미를 모르지 않는 나이인데.(웃음) 플립은 역시 접었다 펼쳤다 다채롭게 쓰는 즐거움이 크더라구요. 또 워치는 경기나 팀 훈련을 제외하고는 개인 훈련을 할 때나 쉬거나 잘 때, 항상 차고 있어서 따지고 보면 플립보다 저랑 더 오래오래 붙어 지내는 제품이라고 할 수 있어요.

GQ 살결 가까이 붙어있다 보니 워치가 즉각 즉각 ‘잔소리’를 할 때도 많잖아요. 갤럭시 워치가 운동 & 체력 관리에 도움이 되는 걸 실감하나요?
HM 뭔가 제 상태를 바로바로 알 수 있게 해주는 점에서 유용하다고 할까요? 갑자기 움직임이 크거나, 혹은 너무 없거나, 뭔가 변화가 있다 싶으면 바로 ‘지잉’하고 진동이 울리죠. 물론 필드 위에서나 트레이닝 중에는 더 전문적인 기구의 도움을 받긴 하지만 그런 특수한 경우를 제외하고는 워치로 제 기록을 확인해 보는 재미가 있어요.
GQ 운동 & 체력 매니지먼트를 돕는 퍼스널 트레이너 같네요.
HM 맞아요, 손목만 봐도 그냥 딱 알 수 있거든요. 예를 들면 한강에서 러닝을 할 때 워치를 착용하면 제 심박 구간을 설정하고 뛰면 제가 지금 목표하고 있는 구간을 잘 유지하는지, 아니면 오버페이스 중인지, 더 속도를 내서 뛰어야 하는지, 손목 위에 딱 나타나니까요. 또 하루하루 저의 기록들을 비교하는 재미도 있고요. 엄청 간단해 보이는 기능이지만 잘 활용하다 보면 은근히 보람 있어요.

GQ 갤럭시 워치 이전에, 손흥민 선수에겐 아버지라는 든든한 일상생활 코치가 있었죠. 피부에 밀착해서 차고 다니는 갤럭시 워치와 아버지의 어드바이스가 어떻게 닮고 다르게 다가왔는지 궁금해요.
HM 아버지는 좀 더 높은 영역에서 저에게 많은 조언과 격려와 코칭을 해주시는 분이세요. 물론 아버지뿐 아니라 저에게 가족은 자체가 멘탈적인 측면에서 많은 도움과 안정감을 주고 있고요. 갤럭시 워치는 조금 더 제 개인의 일상에서 운동이나 수면을 측정해 건강하게 지낼 수 있도록 코칭 해주는 존재 같아요.
GQ 워치 유저에게 궁금한 게 있어요. 보통 잘 때는 시계를 빼고 자기 마련이지만 워치는 반대잖아요. ‘시계를 차고 잔다’는 상황이 조금은 생소한데요?
HM 제가 폰보다도 더 많이 사용하는 게 워치인데요. 워치를 낮에 착용하는 건 당연하고 밤에 잘 때도 차고 자기 때문일 거예요. 저는 특히 수면을 정말 중요하게 생각하는 편이라 워치를 차고 자면서 제가 어떤 잠을 자는지 트래킹 해요.

GQ 잠을 분석하는 게 일상에 어떤 영향을 미쳐요?
HM 어떤 잠을 잤는지를 알면 다음 날 어떤 하루를 보낼지 각이 나오거든요. 신체적인 측면만을 말하는 게 아니라 제가 어떤 기분과 마음으로 다음 날을 보낼 것인지까지요. 일단 워치를 차고 자면 제 수면 상태를 ‘잘 잤다’ 혹은 ‘못 잤다’로 표현되는 기분으로만 아는 게 아니라 숫자로 파악할 있어서 좋아요. 분석하는 것에서 끝이 아니라 저한테 맞는 코칭을 해주기도 하구요.
GQ 갤럭시 워치는 수면 유형을 8가지의 동물로 분석하는데, 손흥민의 수면 유형은 어떤 동물이에요?
HM 걱정 없는 사자 유형이더라고요. 규칙적으로 잠들고 일어나려고 노력하는 편이고, 잠을 대부분 정말 잘 자는 편입니다. 잠을 되게 소중하게 생각하는 편이라…(웃음)
GQ 갤럭시 워치로 알게 된 손흥민 선수의 평소 수면 습관이 있을까요?
HM 제가 깊게 잠들었는지, 아니면 얕은 잠을 자는지를 수면 차트 형태로 보여주는데, 어제만 해도 8시간 동안 깨지도 않고 꿀잠 잤더라고요.(웃음) 걱정 없는 사자 맞는 것 같아요.

GQ 갤럭시 제품을 하나둘 써본 인연으로 갤럭시 앰배서더가 된 거예요?
HM 맞아요.(웃음) 실제로 갤럭시 유저가 되면서 자연스럽게 삼성과 브랜드 앰버서더가 되는 것에 대해서 논의할 수 있게 됐어요. 유저로서 그냥 제가 매일 사용하는 제품들이 저를 편안하게 만들어줬으면 좋겠다고 생각하는데, 그런 점에서 갤럭시는 저에게 의미가 있었어요.
GQ 브랜드 앰버서더로서요? 축구 선수로서요?
HM 두 정체성이 어쩌면 다르지 않은 것 같아요. 필드 위에서나 밖에서나 저는 저니까요. 필드 위에서 종종 여러 일을 겪다 보니 필드 밖에서도 무엇이 중요한지를 많이 생각해요. 다양성과 평등은 요즘의 화두인 주제이기도 한데, 저 역시 중요하게 생각할 수밖에 없는 것들이거든요. 파란색 메시지, 녹색 메시지에 따라 상대를 구분하는 것들도 있다고 하잖아요.(웃음) 이런 고민들을 하는 가운데, 갤럭시 측에서 던진, 단순한 계약 관계가 아니라 함께 고민하며 같은 곳을 바라보는 파트너가 됐으면 좋겠다 라는 말에 특히 넘어갔다고나 할까요?(웃음)
GQ 필드 위의 손흥민은 어디를 바라보고 있어요?
HM 축구 세계에서 우승만이 유일한 승리가 아니거든요. 더 많은 사람들이 행복한 승리도 있다고 생각해요. 모두가 어떻게 참여할 수 있었고, 어떻게 몰입할 수 있었는지에 따라서. 저는 그게 중요하다고 생각하고 그 부분이 갤럭시와 서로 마음이 통한 것 같아요.
GQ 실제로 선수로서 많은 사람들에게 선한 영향력을 미치고 있잖아요. 손흥민이 지닌 긍정적 힘으로 이루고 싶은 목표나 변화가 있을까요?
HM 아이들에게 꿈을 꾸게 해주고 싶어요. 꿈을 이룰 수 있도록 도움도 주고 싶고요. 축구를 하는 유소년 선수들뿐 아니라 모든 아이들이 다양한 분야에서 꿈을 가지고 가까이 다가갈 수 있도록 무언가 해보고 싶어서요. 구체적으로 무엇을 어떻게 해야할 지는 아직 잘 모르겠지만, 천천히 할 수 있는 작은 것부터 도움이 되어보려 해요.
GQ 시즌도 끝나고 조금은 여유가 생겼을 것 같은데, 오프 시즌엔 어떤 순간을 ‘찰칵’ 캡처하고 싶어요? 어떤 간섭도 없이 자유롭게 쓸 수 있는 24시간이 생겼다고 가정 해볼게요, 뭘 가장 하고 싶어요?
HM 그동안 소홀했던 친한 지인들을 만나고 싶네요. 함께 좋은 음식과 좋은 장소에서 함께 시간을 보내고 싶어요. 그냥 손흥민으로서, 손흥민의 시간 안에서요.

“I believe what you look like off the field is just as important as what you look like on the field.”

Son HeungMin is known for his incredible soccer skills on the field, but off the pitch, he’s just as particular about his style and tech choices. From smartphones to wearables, Son HeungMin opens up about his favorite gadgets and fashion preferences in an exclusive interview with GQ.

GQ You’ve been a Galaxy user since 2021, and we heard it was you who first wanted to try out Galaxy. What drew you to it?
HM I was interested in the Galaxy Thom Browne edition two years ago, but it was really hard to come by but thankfully Samsung helped me to get one for me. And I was surprised even more when Samsung gave me Maison Margiela edition as a gift later.
GQ Both editions are luxury fashion collaborations. Do you prioritize design when choosing your smartphones?
HM Absolutely. I believe that one’s appearance off the field is as important as what you look like on the field. That includes considering how you dress and what looks good on you. Carrying around the right electronics can be a way of expressing oneself, as you don’t have to be sporty all the time just because you’re a soccer player. That’s why I’ve enjoyed the Thom Browne and Maison Margiela editions.
GQ In terms of fashion, how would you describe the style of these two products?
HM When it comes to fashion and everyday items, I prefer to keep things simple, and that’s precisely why I love the Thom Browne and Maison Margiela editions. They bear the signature styles of these brands, yet they’re not too flashy or over-the-top, which suits my taste perfectly. The addition of these design elements enhances the look of the Galaxy Fold, giving it a sleek appearance when folded, akin to a well-designed piece of clothing with just the right balance of simplicity and elegance.

GQ Aside from the design, how does it feel to use?
HM First of all, it is really easy to use and carry around in one hand. You can also fold it and put it on a table for video calls or to watch videos without having to hold in your hand the whole time. Above all, I love the simplicity of the Flip’s folding design.
GQ It must have taken some time to get used to it. Can you give us a genuine review from someone that switched to Galaxy
HM I’m actually more tech-savvy than you think(Laughs.) I quickly transferred my files by myself. It easy to install apps and move files on the Galaxy, There are many useful features, it is great to be able to watch videos and chat using the split-screen. It feels like a totally new mobile experience with the screen and feel of the Flip.
GQ What features do you use the most on a daily basis?
HM I don’t take a lot of selfies, but I’m using the Flip in a new way, by taking pictures with the Flip folded. It is a really unique and fun way to take pictures with my teammates in the locker room.
GQ But you take a lot of pictures when you celebrate your goals. (Laughs) Is there a special meaning behind Son HuengMin’s signature “snap celebration?”
HM I’ve been wanting to create my own signature celebration for a few years now. People might think I’m taking pictures of the moment, but I wanted to capture the feeling of happiness, the importance of a goal, and the fact that it could be the last one. That’s why I decided on the click gesture.
GQ Famous for being a homebody, your routine consists of “home-training-home.” Are there any features that are perfect for enjoying your homelife?
HM Lately, I’ve been trying to connect my mobile devices with my home appliances. Since I spend most of my days off at home, it’s nice to have more things to play with (Laughs) I also use the Watch for a daily quick health check. Since I started using the Galaxy, I switched to the Buds, the Watch, and the Tab due to their cross-product compatibility. (Laughs)

GQ You started with a smartphone and became a Galaxy enthusiast. Among all the products, which one is your absolute favorite?
HM The Galaxy Flip and the Watch. They are the devices I use all the time. The Flip is fun to use. At my age, I am nostalgic for flip-phones. (laughs) The Flip is fun to fold and unfold, and has a lot of unique ways that it can be used. But I have been using the Watch longer than the Flip. Besides matches and training, I always wear the Watch while working out, resting, and even sleeping.
GQ Since it is always on you, the watch often nags you with reminders.  Do you find that the Galaxy Watch helps you manage your workouts and fitness?
HM I find it pretty handy as it lets me know exactly what my current physical condition is. Whether I’m moving too much, too little, or if there are any noticeable changes, the Watch alerts me with rings and vibrations. Of course, during matches or training, I rely on more specialized devices, but outside of those, it’s enjoyable to keep track of my performance with the Watch.
GQ You could say it is like having a personal trainer to help you with your workouts and fitness.
HM Exactly. I can just look down at my wrist and know. For example, when I run along the Han River I can set my target heart rate and see if I’m hitting my target zone, if I’m overpacing or if I need to pick up the pace. It’s all there on my wrist. It is fun to compare my performance day to day. It is a simple feature, but is really useful.

GQ Before using the Galaxy Watch, you had your father as your trusted daily coach. What are the similarities and differences between his advice and the Galaxy Watch?
HM My dad gives me advice, encouragement, and coaching on a higher level. And not only my  dad but my family provide mental support and stability. On the other hand, the Galaxy Watch acts as a personal daily coach by measuring my exercise and sleep, helping me stay healthy.
GQ I have a question for Watch users. Normally, you take off a watch when going to bed, but it is the opposite for Watch users. Isn’t the concept of “sleeping with your watch” a little strange?
HM I use the Watch more than my phone. Of course, I wear it during the day, but I also sleep with it at night. It is important to have a good night’s sleep, so I can track my sleep and see how well I am sleeping.
GQ How does analyzing your sleep affect your daily life?
HM By knowing the kind of sleep I had, it helps me know what kind of day I will have. It is not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. When I wear the Watch when I sleep, I can see concrete data of how I slept. Not just the feeling of “good” or “bad” in the morning. The Watch not only analyzes, but also gives me personalized coaching.
GQ The Galaxy Watch analyzes sleep types into eight different animals, which one is Son HeungMin?
HM I’m a carefree lion. I try to wake up and sleep at a regular time, and I generally sleep very well. I really value my sleep… (Laughs)
GQ Do you have any sleep habits that you discovered through using the Galaxy Watch?
HM The sleep chart shows me if I am a deep or light sleeper. And just yesterday, I slept for eight hours without waking up. (Laughs) I guess I really am a carefree lion.

GQ Did you become a Galaxy ambassador after using several Galaxy products?
HM That’s right! (Laughs) Once I became an avid Galaxy user, naturally led to discussion on becoming a Samsung Brand ambassador. As a user, I just want products that I use daily to make my life more comfortable, and that’s why Galaxy had meaning for me.
GQ As a brand ambassador? Or a soccer player?
HM I think they are not so different. Whether I am on the field or off the field, I am still myself. I go through a lot of challenges on the field, and I think a lot about what is important off the field as well. Diversity and equality are hot topics nowadays, and I can’t help but think they are important as well. These days, people even distinguish you based on blue and green text bubbles. (Laughs) Based on these considerations, I accepted the ambassadorship because they wanted a partner who shares the same view, not just a simple contractual relationship. So I agreed to it. (Laughs)
GQ Where is Son HeungMin looking on the field?
HM Soccer is not just about winning a single match. I believe there are other victories that make more people happy. It depends how everyone is able to participate and how they can be immersed. That is what I think is important, and that is where I feel a connection with Galaxy.
GQ You actually provide a lot of positive influence as a player. Are there any goals or changes you want to achieve with your positive influence?
HM I want to inspire children to dream and achieve their dreams. Not only soccer players, but all children should be able to pursue their dreams, in whatever field they want. I do not know exactly what or how yet, but I want to start doing something small that can make a difference.
GQ Now that the season is over, you have some free time. During the off season, what moment do you want to “snap?” Imagine you have 24 hours to yourself, no obligations or constraints. What would you like to do?
HM I would like to meet up with friends that I’ve neglected for a while. I want to spend time with them eating some good food at a nice place. Just as Son HeungMin, on Son HeungMin’s time.
