A’s lose on old friend Josh Donaldson’s homer in 10th
The November 2014 trade that sent Donaldson from Oakland to Toronto hasn’t been forgotten in these parts, especially because the third baseman continued to produce.
Donaldson stepped to the plate after Kevin Pillar was plunked by Frankie Montas and sent a 1-2 slider high over the wall in left-center.
A’s leadoff hitter Rajai Davis had four hits, three for extra bases, and scored four runs.
Davis doubled in the first, singled in the third and tripled in the fifth, sprinting around first and second and seemingly destined to sprint around third as the ball he smacked to left field off Francisco Liriano bounced off Chris Coghlan’s glove and rolled away.
The Blue Jays went ahead 4-1 when Jharel Cotton surrendered two homers in the second inning, a solo shot by Justin Smoak and three-run blow by Pillar.
Cotton lasted six innings and gave up no runs beyond the second-inning rally, and relievers John Axford and Liam Hendriks blanked the Blue Jays for the next three innings.
