Outfielder Jaycob Brugman to join A’s at Tampa Bay
The A’s youth movement will get another addition Friday when Jaycob Brugman joins the team at Tampa Bay.
Brugman, a 25-year-old outfielder, has been told of his first-ever big-league promotion, according to numerous sources.
A left-handed hitter, Brugman is batting .288 with one homer, eight RBIs, 16 runs and 18 walks in 33 games after missing the beginning of Triple-A Nashville’s season with a calf injury.
Reliever Frankie Montas is one potential candidate to be demoted after allowing two more home runs Wednesday and five in his past four outings; the right-hander has given up nine homers in all in 28 2/3 innings.
The A’s have been using an eight-man bullpen all season but could drop down to seven briefly.
Mark Canha, who already was sent down once this season, is batting .191 after going 0 for 4 with three strikeouts Wednesday and he is still getting accustomed to center field.
The A’s also will be adding reliever Sean Doolittle to the roster this weekend; he’ll come off the DL as the 26th man Saturday for the doubleheader against the Rays.
Like Ryon Healy and Chad Pinder, Brugman is part of a group of young A’s position players who are expected to form the core group of the club the next several years, with infielders Franklin Barreto and Matt Chapman also likely to be called up in the next month or two along with, at some point, right fielder-first baseman Matt Olson and catcher Bruce Maxwell.
Brugman’s promotion was first reported by minor-league baseball reporter Kelsie Heneghan following Nashville’s combined no-hitter Wednesday at Omaha.

The A’s 54 homers at the Coliseum are the most in the majors at home.
The A’s 87 home runs overall are tied for third most in the league.
