Giants’ Strickland calls $1,500 bid for brawl jersey ‘crazy’
MILWAUKEE - Hunter Strickland sat on a sofa in the Giants clubhouse and Friday morning and shook his head when told that someone bid $1,500 for the jersey he wore when he and Bryce Harper went at it at AT&T Park on Memorial Day.
The item description on MLB's auction site read, Game-used Memorial Day jersey - Hunter Strickland #60 --
Ejected from the game after fighting with Bryce Harper - (size 48).
Hours before the auction was supposed to close, the item description was changed.
[...] the auction was shut down prematurely with the winning bid listed at $200.
The description posed problem for MLB, which discourages fighting on one hand but was promoting a jersey worn in a brawl.
[...] half the proceeds from game-used gear goes to the player, so a $1,500 sale would have rewarded Strickland with $750.
"[...] baseball stopped the auction, which was a good thing, because they don't want to promote fighting," Strickland said.
Harper earned a four-game suspension for charging the mound after Strickland him with a fastball.
Harper reached a plea-bargain with league officials and served a three-game suspension last week.
Strickland is appealing his suspension and find and will have a hearing at AT&T Park on Tuesday, speaking in person with major-league officials.
Buster Posey and Hunter Pence are both out of the lineup as the Giants try for a split at Miller Park and a 3-4 trip.
Manager Bruce Bochy did not want to push Pence so soon after his return from a hamstring injury.
The Giants face Paolo Espino, a 30-year-old journeyman recalled from Triple-A to make the start for Matt Garza, who was injured in a collision with meaty first baseman Jesus Aguilar in his prior start.
Bochy revealed that Michael Morse injured some ribs during his collision with Jeff Samardzija during the Strickland-Harper brawl.
Morse went on the seven-day concussion list and is not expected to play this weekend against the Twins.
Bochy said Morse remains sore.
The Giants will face two tough starters Friday and Saturday in Ervin Santana and Jose Berrios.
Minnesota has a TBA for Sunday's starter.
Heston threw a no-hitter against the Mets for the Giants two years ago Friday.
