Feds tighten requirements on cell phone surveillance

WASHINGTON — Federal law enforcement officials will be routinely required to get a search warrant before using secretive and intrusive cell-phone-tracking technology under a Justice Department policy announced Thursday. Besides requiring a warrant in most circumstances, except for emergencies like an immediate national security threat, the policy also requires authorities to delete information that’s been collected once they have the data that they need.

A federal judge has approved a $415 million settlement that ends a lengthy legal saga revolving around allegations that Apple, Google and several other Silicon Valley companies illegally conspired to prevent their workers from getting better job offers. Lawyers for the employees argued that the secret agreement illegally suppressed the wages of the affected workers. Silicon Valley employers now regularly raid each other’s workforces in search of talented engineers who might help them come up with ideas and build technology’s next hot product.

(AP) — Fort Carson says two soldiers injured when their Black Hawk helicopter landed hard in a suburban Denver forest in Douglas County remain hospitalized and in stable condition. The military installation in Colorado Springs says investigators from the U.S. Army Combat Readiness Center in Alabama's Fort Rucker is deploying to Fort Carson to lead the review of the accident.
