Truck crash, downed power lines close southbound I-880 to Highway 238

A truck crashed into a utility pole early Monday on the transition from Interstate 880 to Highway 238 in Hayward, knocking down high-voltage wires and closing the busy interchange. The cleanup continued through much of the day, with the connector reopening shortly before 4 p.m. While the freeway was closed, the California Highway Patrol allowed tractor-trailer trucks to use eastbound Interstate 580, where they are normally banned.
