HC orders rape convict to pay Rs 1 lakh to survivor, cuts sentence

In a verdict that is abound to be widely discussed, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court reduced a rape convict’s sentence on a condition that he pay Rs1 lakh to the survivor, over 11 years after the incident in 2004. The survivor is now married, with two children. It was done after survivor appeared in the court with her husband and expressed her desire to buy peace with Gittikhadan-based convict, who is also married and has a three-year-old daughter. The child born to the surivor as a result crime died the day after birth in Mayo hospital.

'Mad Men' star Hamm and Westfeldt split after 18 years

Hamm and Westfeldt released a statement Monday through publicist Annett Wolf that "with great sadness" they were separating after 18 years. Earlier this year, the "Mad Men" actor completed treatment for alcohol addiction and praised Westfeldt, an actress and filmmaker, for her support, Wolf said at the time.

(Reuters) - Lawyers for jailed Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis said on Monday they had asked an appellate court to force Governor Steve Beshear to let her refuse to issue same-sex marriage licenses based on her religious convictions. The lawyers sought emergency relief from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, asking it to grant Davis an exemption from the "governor's mandate that all county clerks issue marriage licenses," the non-profit legal advocacy group Liberty Counsel, which represents Davis, said in a news release.
