U.S. stocks opened sharply higher Tuesday, tracking gains in global equity markets as investors bet that China's central bank will launch fresh stimulus in response to weak trade data. The U.S. stock market was closed on Monday for the Labor Day holiday. The S&P 500 opened 29 points, or 1.5% higher at 1,950. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 270 points, or 1.7%, to 16,361. The Nasdaq Composite began the day up 90 points, or 1.9% at 4,774.

Moscow Exchange down after technical problems

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian financial markets have been paralyzed for more than an hour after trading on the Moscow Exchange was suspended due to technical problems. The exchange, which is the center of Russian financial trading, said it encountered a "technical failure" in its data center at around 3 p.m. local time Tuesday. It was still offline as of 4.15 p.m., with the exchange saying in a statement that it was "preparing to resume trading using backup systems." No time was given for trading to resume.
