College Tourist | Roslyn Kent, University of Calgary

Nestled in the foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Calgary is one of Canada's lesser talked about gems that's known for its natural beauty, authentic western roots, and diverse culinary scene.
Oh, and the never ending winters? Yep, we get those too; that's not say the snow stops us from getting outside and enjoying all the city has to offer. Here are the top 15 things to do in and near my college town... Читать дальше...

Growing Summer Savings in the Garden

The Huffington Post

I love the outdoors and I use any excuse that I can to get out and experience nature. However, during the worst of winter, it can be tough to even recall what a beautiful summer day feels like. With a thrifty approach, planning a summer fruit or vegetable garden can provide a break from the bleak winter months and for your pocketbook, too.

Some people fall in love with seed and gardening catalogs around this time of year, tempted to spend substantial money on fancy tools, equipment, gardening clothes, deluxe fertilizers or supplies. Читать дальше...

Hillary Wins 7 on Super Tuesday, Is Bernie's Window Closing?

The Huffington Post

Hillary Clinton won 7 of 11 contests in yesterday's Super Tuesday Democratic primaries, while Bernie Sanders secured wins in 4 states, Colorado, Minnesota, Oklahoma, and his home state of Vermont.

I interviewed many voters yesterday at Boston, Massachusetts area polling places, and at Senator Sanders' official Boston election results watch party, where the mood was cautiously optimistic and simultaneously disappointed. Looking at the delegate math as of today, including Hillary Clinton's presumed superdelegate support... Читать дальше...

"Men Stick With the Men, Women Stick With the Women," Heterosexism in the Addiction Recovery Communities

The Huffington Post

"Men stick with the men and women stick with the women."

When I first entered into recovery from a substance use disorder at age of 24, there were many things that confused me about the rhetoric of the recovery communities. Much of this confusion was easily attributed to years of accumulated mental fog still wafting away from my healing brain, however some things were just flat out puzzling to me even on the clearest of days. There were many rules to learn when it came down to what it meant to be a young person in recovery... Читать дальше...

On Game Day, a young athlete can usually benefit by having a positive influence on the sidelines, be it a coach or a parent. I’ve seen this first-hand for many years.

When talking to a young athlete about a sub-par performance, a coach or parent can try and turn things around by yelling or demeaning. That usually doesn’t work.

On the other hand, the coach can stress the positives, and maybe past accomplishments, while addressing current missteps and a plan of action. Читать дальше...

How Turning the Other Cheek Works

The Huffington Post

I used to be a bull in a china shop. I was driven. I was pushy. I was rude. I thought that I had to protect myself at all times so I came out swinging. I thought I had to fight for what I wanted. I saw aggression as protection and the way to succeed.

Over time, I was able to soften this way of being. One lesson that stands out for me happened a few years back. I found myself in a situation with a difficult person. My old self wanted to fight. I thought I needed to be aggressive in order to make it through the conflict. Читать дальше...

My Night Out: Trading Broadway Tunes for Caribbean Melodies

The Huffington Post

I arrived in St. Martin full of excitement and ready to embark on a musical exploration and cultural adventure. I headed to my hotel, Belmond La Samanna, a luxury resort with white-washed Mediterranean decor which overlooks a stunning beach on the French side of the island. Staring out at the turquoise water from the balcony of my room, I felt the carefree breeze of island life wash over me and immediately knew that this musical exploration would be a stark contrast from my usual rendezvous with Broadway.
