Riding the 2016 Indian Chieftain

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

It's a crisp winter morning and we are half a ton of metal and flesh, rumbling down a two-lane Sonoma County backroad. George Strait twang wafts from the stereo. Few things in life are finer than this. The 2016 Indian Chieftain I'm testing has enough v-twin growl to let you know you're running 111 cubic inches of displacement, but not so much as to shake the fillings out of your molars. It's just right.

Magic Virtues: "Don Pasquale" at the Metropolitan Opera

The Huffington Post

There's a lot of Gateano Donizetti being seen at the Metropolitan Opera this season. There's the Tudor Queen cycle (Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, and Roberto Devereux, all starring Sondra Radvanovsky), the sappy L'Elisir D'Amore, and, most likely to be overlooked because of its mere 5 performances, Don Pasquale, which opened at the Met on Friday.

Trumpery in America

The Huffington Post

Trump stood in front of an audience in West Palm Beach, Florida following his Super Saturday victories justifying his penis size and boasting about what a "winner" he is. When asked a serious policy question on same sex marriage, Trump refused to respond, telling the reporter to "sit down."

This has been the theme of his candidacy. Appealing to the public through "showmanship," Trump has turned the presidential race into the ultimate reality show. Through one liners, insults, and fear mongering... Читать дальше...

FX Puts Their 'Trust' In Danny Boyle's New Limited Series

«Indiewire»

While Danny Boyle's "Steve Jobs" didn't get the box office love it deserved (it's a terrific film), don't lean on that fact to suggest that it explains his move into television for his next project. The director hasn't been shy about working on the small screen, launching the procedural "Babylon" starring Brit Marling a couple of years back. And now he's headed to FX for what sounds like a cracking series. READ MORE: Ranked: The Films Of Danny Boyle FX has ordered ten episodes for what will be... Читать дальше...

Boldly Going Where Few Have Gone Before: Meet Space Gynecologist Dr. Varsha Jain

The Huffington Post

Once upon a time, not so long ago, people feared that if a woman went into space while on her period, the blood would reverse its flow into her body -- also known as retrograde menstruation -- causing pain and possible death. This was one of many false notions that kept women from being included on space missions because back in those dark ages even the world's brightest operated under socio-cultural misperceptions surrounding the still-taboo subject of a woman's "time of the month." It's been more... Читать дальше...

I am a Pakistani Indian....

The Huffington Post

There is something about India as an idea which transcends the modern day political configurations. It is the idea of India as a huge mass of land which stretches from Balochistan to present day Bangladesh. This idea of India is independent of any political configuration. In fact during the past thousands of years, this mass of land has very seldom been a unified political entity. And yet there is something which loosely unites the inhabitants despite their substantial religious and at times even... Читать дальше...

Does God Live in Our Zip Code?

The Huffington Post

In her book, Epicureanism at the Origins of Modernity, the philosopher Catharine Wilson has asserted that "we are all, in a sense, Epicureans now." The biblical scholar N. T. Wright quotes Wilson, and calls her assessment "spot on."

When I was a young man, I thought Epicureans were people who ate foods with names I couldn't pronounce at restaurants I couldn't afford. And indeed, Webster's "simple" definition of Epicurean is "Involving an appreciation of fine food and drink." But we are clearly not all Epicureans in that sense. Читать дальше...

Bernie Sanders on CNN can flip back and forth between Fox News and MSNBC to catch the remaining four GOP hopefuls in one-on-one Q&As.

Who Belongs? the GOP's Anti-Immigrant Race to the Bottom, and the Dominican Example

The Huffington Post

In this presidential election year, the ironies should not be lost on anyone that the three top republican presidential nominees include two candidates of Hispanic descent: Senators Marco Rubio (R. Fl.), and Ted Cruz (R. Tex) (both are of Cuban descent). Yet all three top candidates for the presidency are struggling over who is the most anti-immigrant.

Senator Rubio has an uphill climb here because he was one of the co-sponsor of the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013... Читать дальше...

The New-Age Fast Food Philosophy

The Huffington Post

by guest blogger Gillian Francella, multimedia journalist and converted vegan/vegetarian

Swap your potato chips for kale chips, nix the soda, and grab some fresh-pressed juice... Forget hamburgers! It's all about fried quinoa and vegan options! The fast-food chains you grew up with are gradually being replaced by fast-casual restaurants like Chipotle, Tender Greens, and LYFE Kitchen--restaurants choosing to focus on fresh, locally sourced, and nutritious dishes in place of various deep-fried foods. Iran fires 2 missiles marked with ‘Israel must be wiped out’

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Iran test-fired two ballistic missiles Wednesday with the phrase “Israel must be wiped out” written in Hebrew on them, state media reported, a show of strength by the Islamic Republic as U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Israel. The new missile firings — the latest in a series of tests in recent days — appeared aimed at demonstrating Iran will push ahead with its ballistic program after scaling backing its nuclear program under the deal reached last year with the... Maple syrup-makers say warm winter may hurt production

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Producers in the U.S. "Maple Belt" say a mild winter has allowed them to tap trees early, but the harvest could be down from last year due to the early onset of spring warmth. The arrival of consistently warm weather typically ends the maple season, because budding trees produce sap that makes for much less palatable syrup. Maine's maple syrup season got started abnormally early this year, with sap buckets visible on trees around Valentine's Day in the southern part of the state. Читать дальше...

Time for action on North Korea's human rights black hole

The Huffington Post

The following statement was delivered on March 2, 2016 at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland

Mr. President,

This year, we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Human Rights Council as well as the golden jubilee of the adoption of the International Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

As UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon made clear at the Council on Monday, the links between the three pillars of the UN - peace and security... Читать дальше...

Humanity

The Huffington Post

Humanity is a synonym for mankind. But it's also a description of a set of values. For instance if you are treating a captured enemy in a humane way, with humanity, you're observing the Geneva Conventions. When ISIS's beheads their captives or in the case of the Jordanian pilot sets them on fire in a cage, they're demonstrating behavior that's the direct opposite of normatively humane behavior. Conversely the Truth and Reconciliation Commissions established in both South Africa and Tunisia show that... Читать дальше...

The Only Thing You Need to Know to Set and Achieve Small Business Goals

The Huffington Post

In spite of scientific research and hard data to back the importance of goal setting, few business owners actually track goals. In fact, more than 80 percent of the 300 small business owners surveyed for the Staples National Small Business Survey said that they don't keep track of their business goals. Yikes!

Based on that alarming stat, it's no surprise to realize that 77 percent of business owners have yet to achieve their vision.

Truth be told, it's difficult to know if the "inability"... Читать дальше...

Here's what a Trump presidency might mean for science

BusinessInsider.com

REUTERS/Mike Stone

Just about every topic, from eminent domain to “hand” size, has scuttled onto the debate stage this election cycle. But the presidential candidates have uttered little about science policy.

“It’s been conspicuous by its absence,” says Dr. Peter J. Hotez, Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Nonetheless, the Republican frontrunner, Donald Trump, has made public remarks that give voters a glimpse into what some of his scientific policies might be. Читать дальше...

49ers’ Kaepernick and Broncos? Osweiler’s exit invites speculation

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

Five years after the 49ers made a draft-day trade with the Broncos to move up nine spots to select Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick, it’s conceivable the teams could be involved in another deal involving the quarterback. The Broncos are considering both Kaepernick and former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III as fallback options after Brock Osweiler, their presumptive starter in 2016, agreed in principle to a four-year, $72 million deal with the Texans, the NFL Network reported. The 49ers traded... Читать дальше...
