Man gets at least 6 years for brother's stabbing death

(AP) — A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to six to 15 years in state prison after he was convicted of stabbing his older brother to death two years ago following an argument over cigarettes. Jurors had convicted him of voluntary manslaughter in the slaying of 19-year-old David Crothers.

2 Mexican cousins get life in US prisons over 2013 slaying

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Prosecutors say two 60-year-old cousins from Mexico must serve life terms in U.S. prisons for helping set up the 2013 Texas slaying of an attorney who once led a drug cartel. Ledezma-Cepeda in May was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder for hire in what prosecutors say involved electronic stalking of the victim.

Pentagon plays down report on cost-cutting study

Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said senior managers at the Pentagon concluded that the study, "while well-intentioned, had limited value" because it didn't take into account existing programs to improve efficiency and because it lacked "specific, actionable recommendations appropriate to the department." The Washington Post reported Tuesday that the study, released in January 2015, recommended streamlining bureaucracy through personnel attrition, curtailing high-priced contractors and making better use of information technology. The Latest: Lower revenue restrains governor's budget plan

Gov. Dennis Daugaard will offer a budget plan restrained by lower-than-expected tax collections, forcing officials to address a shortfall this year and tamp down spending increases for the next budget cycle. The plan includes roughly $20 million in general state spending increases during the next budget year for education, Medicaid providers and state workers. The proposal includes roughly $2.4 million for budget reserves and $5 million for a new animal disease laboratory, among other expenses.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Washington Post report says the Defense Department disregarded an internal study that found it had a bloated bureaucracy and could cut $125 billion in administrative costs over five years.
