New Giants closer Melancon explains why he picked San Francisco

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

A day after the Giants signed Mark Melancon to be their closer, several critical details about the new closer emerged when he spoke on a conference call. Ryan Vogelsong did quite a sell job on the Giants when he and Melancon were teammates in Pittsburgh, long before Melancon became a free agent. Pence, Buster Posey, Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford and George Kontos also made telephone recruiting calls. Getting a record contract a reliever, four years at $62 million, surely highlighted Melancon's... Читать дальше...

Man arrested in ex-NFL player's death; sheriff defends probe

«SFGate» (sfgate.com)

(AP) — The Louisiana man who fatally shot ex-NFL player Joe McKnight during a road rage dispute was jailed on a manslaughter charge as a sheriff angrily defended the investigation Tuesday, saying authorities "strategically" waited for days to make the arrest because they needed to find independent witnesses. Ronald Gasser, 54, was initially taken into custody after the shooting last Thursday but he was released without being charged, drawing heated criticism from protesters who said race played a role in the investigation. The Economy's Hidden Problem: We're Out of Big Ideas

WSJ.com

There is a yawning chasm between what innovation promises for the economy and what it is delivering. Outside of personal technology, improvements in everyday life have been incremental, not revolutionary. A Wall Street Journal series explains why that is and looks at ways to reboot.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson is quite optimistic about video, and thinks you'll be watching it nine hours a day, eventually.

There are only 24 hours in a day, so if Stephenson is correct, that means people will spend about 38% of their lives — including sleep — watching video.

"We are going to be living in a world where video is pervasively in front of you," Stephenson said at Business Insider's Ignition conference Tuesday.

The Wolves, the Spurs, and their never-ending divergent paths

«Star Tribune» (startribune.com)

The Timberwolves finished the 2003-04 season with the best record in the Western Conference (58-24), securing their eighth consecutive playoff berth in the process. They edged out the Spurs (57-25) — Kevin Garnett getting one up on Tim Duncan — by a game for that best-record distinction, a significant accomplishment considering San Antonio was the defending NBA champion and had also won a title in 1999 (defeating the Wolves in the first round in 1999, by the way, and frustrating an early 20s fan... BusinessInsider.com

Thomson Reuters

The Federal Reserve used extraordinary monetary policy measures to pull the US economy out of the Great Recession.

As the Fed continues to return to normal, fiscal policy is set to step up in a big way. President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to cut income and corporate taxes, and allot about $1 trillion to infrastructure spending — two cornerstones of any fiscal-stimulus plan.

If Trump's fiscal policy drives up inflation, and the Fed decides to combat this overheating by hiking rates... Читать дальше...
