Merle Haggard Has Strong Words for Today’s Country Music
Looks like country legend Merle Haggard is not a fan of today’s country music.
When asked about the current state of country music, the 78-year old told InForum, “I can’t tell what they’re doing. They’re talking about screwing on a pickup tailgate and things of that nature. I don’t find no substance. I don’t find anything you can whistle, and nobody even attempts to write a melody. It’s more of that kids’ stuff. It’s hot right now, but I’ll tell you what, it’s cooling off.”
(We’re guessing “they’re” means today’s contemporary artists.)
The icon might not like most of what he’s hearing in country these days, but he does sing the praises of fast-rising singer-songwriter, Sturgill Simpson.
“As far as I’m concerned, he’s the only one out there,” Haggard noted. “The rest of them sound like a bunch of [crap] to me. He comes out and does a great show.”
And just because the legend isn’t happy with modern country music doesn’t mean he’s not a fan of other current institutions - like social media! Haggard is very active on Twitter; keeping in touch with other artists and fans and he loves to Snapchat.
This weekend also marks a milestone for the Country Music Hall of Famer: It’s the 50th anniversary of the release of Haggard’s first album, Strangers and the formation of his band, the Strangers who still play with him today.
Hats off to the outlaw countryman.
