|||Pretoria - A 34-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed an elderly woman to death and wounded her son in Wonderboom on Monday.
Police understood that the attacker was employed by the woman’s son at a restaurant in Kolonnade Centre.
The suspect was arrested hours after he fled the scene of the attack, and went to the restaurant, where he apparently broke in and stole money.
Police spokeswoman Mirna von Benecke said the suspect broke into the house and attacked the man and his mother.
“His mother, who was in her 60s, was stabbed and died on the scene,” Von Benecke said.
She said the woman’s son, who is in his 40s, also sustained injuries in the confrontation and was rushed to hospital. He was discharged later in the day. Von Benecke said the suspect was arrested in Nina Park, north of Pretoria, where he was found in a gambling establishment.
“He was traced by Sinoville police officers at a gambling place. He is being held at the Pretoria North police station and will appear at the local magistrate court (on Wednesday),” she said.
He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, house robbery, and business robbery.
Blood stains could still be seen at the pavement of the house on Monday afternoon.
A neighbour, who refused to be named, speculated that the tragedy resulted from a dispute over money.
“The guy came here demanding that he be paid his money and that is when things got violent,” the neighbour said.
