Fifth baby orca born to southern resident killer whale population

A new baby orca whale was spotted off Sooke, British Columbia, on Monday, the fifth offspring born since December 2014, in the J, K, and L pods that make up the southern resident killer whale population and spend much of their lives in the inland waters of Washington and B.C. “We hope that this year’s ‘baby boom’ represents a turnaround in what has been a negative population trend in recent years,” said the Center for Whale Research, based in Friday Harbor, whose staffers spotted the newborn.   The baby is officially orca L-122, its mother L-91.  It is the second baby whale born into the L pod. No newborn orcas
