Stanford pushing Christian McCaffrey for Heisman Trophy
The new game is the school’s Heisman Trophy campaign for Christian McCaffrey.
The name sounds like an exotic but decaffeinated beverage from Starbucks, but it’s a blend of the wildcat formation, in which the sophomore running back takes the snap, and his name.
A win over the Ducks (6-3, 4-2 Pac-12) would give the Cardinal (8-1, 7-0) their third North Division title in four years and would put them in the conference championship game Dec. 5 at Levi’s Stadium.
In Tuesday’s second College Football Playoff poll, Stanford moved up four spots to No. 7.
McCaffrey ranks fifth in ESPN’s latest Heisman Trophy Watch, in which Alabama running back Derrick Henry took over the top spot from LSU’s Leonard Fournette, who had been a prohibitive favorite since early in the season.
Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman and Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott are also ahead of McCaffrey.
In two other Heisman rankings, McCaffrey is third (SI.com, which has Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson No. 1) and sixth (CBS Sports, which still favors Fournette).
“He’s played into the Heisman conversation, which is great,” Stanford head coach David Shaw said.
