|||Durban - The eThekwini municipality has confirmed the death of metro police senior support service manager Innocent Chamane.
The municipality sent condolences to the family.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage. Police are investigating the incident,” spokeswoman Tozi Mthethwa said.
Chamane was apparently gunned down as he arrived at his Inanda home on Tuesday night.
It is unclear what the motive was for killing.
Chamane, the manager for support services, had been at the centre of a number of controversies within the metro police.
He was continuously blamed for mismanagement in the unit and was apparently subject to an internal disciplinary hearing where he faced a raft of allegations.
Police spokesman Jay Naicker said a case of murder was being investigated by Hillcrest SAPS.
“It is alleged on Tuesday at about 19:45, at Bhekisisa Road, near Inanda Dam, an off duty metro policeman Innocent Chamane (52) was shot by unknown suspects in front of his house. He sustained gunshot wounds to the head and body.
“The motive for the killing is unknown. No arrests have been made at this stage,” he said Naicker said on Wednesday morning.
