|||Durban - A 38-year-old minibus taxi driver was murdered when two passengers shot and killed him, police said in a statement on Wednesday.
The taxi had been travelling on the R34 past Empageni on Tuesday when the passengers asked the driver to stop.
The two shot and killed the driver before fleeing on foot.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Nqobile Gwala said an off duty police officer had noticed two men running away from the minibus taxi and had become suspicious.
After discovering the murder victim, the officer gave chase with the help of a community member.
“He apprehended one suspect being in possession of a revolver with three live rounds of ammunition. The firearm’s serial number was filed off,” said Gwala.
The 29-year-old suspect will appear in the Ngwelezane Magistrate’s Court on charges of murder and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Gwala said the motive for the killing had not yet been established.
He said the firearm was sent for ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in any other crimes.
KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “We are confident that another suspect will be arrested soon. We applaud the commitment of the community member who assisted in the arrest of the suspect which shows the success of community policing.”
