|||Cape Town - Three men killed in Monday’s shooting attack at a police training centre near Amman, Jordan, worked for DynCorp International, a US intelligence and security contractor.
On Tuesday night, the family of the South African who died confirmed he was Conrad Vaughn Whitehorn, 37, of Joburg.
His brother-in-law, Jaco van der Merwe, who is married to Whitehorn’s sister, Meagan, said they had just found out about his death.
Van der Merwe said Whitehorn had been in Jordan for more than four years.
Because of the nature of his work, Van der Merwe said the family did not know the particulars of what he did.
But DynCorp International, the company for which he worked while in Jordan, said he had worked as a static security officer, close protection officer and security driver for many companies before working for DynCorp.
Van der Merwe said his brother-in-law was unmarried and did not have any children.
DynCorp identified the US victim as Lloyd “Carl” Fields, 46, of Cape Coral, Florida. The name of the Jordanian killed was not immediately released “out of respect for the family’s privacy”.
A senior Jordanian official told Reuters the gunman was a police captain, and authorities identified him as Anwar Abu Zeid. There was no immediate word on the motive for the attack.
A security source said the shooting spree took place in the canteen of the training centre.
