Opposition hits back at Mchunu
Opposition parties in KZN have not taken kindly to Premier Senzo Mchunu’s analysis of them.
|||Durban - Opposition parties in KwaZulu-Natal have not taken kindly to Premier Senzo Mchunu’s analysis of them presented to the ANC conference at the weekend.
Tabling his political report before being voted out as ANC chairman, Mchunu assessed each of the parties, saying they did not pose a threat to ANC’s power.
Mchunu said the IFP had lost relevance. “However, we need not completely dismiss it as a spent force.”
Mchunu said the NFP had found it difficult to achieve cohesion.
The former chairman said the DA was remodelling itself as an all-encompassing mass-based party that paraded blacks while unashamedly propounding an agenda for the privileged.
“Nonetheless, it is our foremost opponent because of its ability to weaken the hegemony we currently enjoy,” he said.
Mchunu described the EFF as populist and a party that had no qualms “playing on emotions and aspirations of our people”. “It nonetheless represents a new dynamic in our political landscape,” he said.
Opposition parties gave Mchunu’s observations short shrift.
DA provincial leader Zwakele Mncwango said: “The Premier acknowledges the DA is growing and under his leadership ANC members joined the DA. Members of the ANC have realised that he is useless,” he said.
IFP chairman Blessed Gwala called on Mchunu to stop attacking his party and focus on his duties as premier.
The NFP’s Vikizitha Mlotshwa said Mchunu had lost the elections for chairmanship of the KZN ANC because, instead of mobilising support, he had been concerning himself with NFP’s affairs.
