UC Merced attacker’s family offers sympathy to victims
The family of the UC Merced student shot dead after stabbing four people in an on-campus rampage spoke out Tuesday, saying in a statement released by their attorney that they sympathized with the victims.
“The family of Faisal Mohammad wishes to thank their friends for their support in this time of grief,” read the statement from attorney Daniel Mayfield.
On Nov. 4, Mohammad, an 18-year-old computer science and engineering student from Santa Clara, attacked two students, an academic adviser and a construction worker while wielding a hunting-style knife, campus officials said.
In a two-page, handwritten manifesto, Mohammad laid out his plans, although it is unclear if the stabbing victims were among those named in his writings.
Investigators found those items in his backpack, along with night-vision goggles, a hammer and duct tape.
Students and officials described Mohammad as a friendly introvert and good student, which his family echoed Tuesday.
