Photos: 15 ridiculous things that can only happen in Nigerian markets
Going to Nigerian markets is one of the most annoying and unforgettable experience that anyone will love to partake in.
The experience of going to a Nigerian market, especially the very busy ones can sometimes discourage you from ever wanting to visit the market again.
One has to deal with the crowd, the filth, the smell and sweaty bodies mingling, which is why some people would never go close to the market. They would rather buy all they need from supermarket or ask someone to do the ‘market runs’ for them.
The experience may not be rosy, but there are some people that still love going to the market.
Here are things only those who have been to a Nigerian market can relate to.
1. When you enter the market and desperate sellers will swarm around you. They start touching and dragging you to come and buy whatever they are selling.
2. When someone old enough to be your mother starts calling you aunty.
3. When you see the ‘fake’ version of your designer bag, dress or shoe hanging from majority of the shops.
4. Someone calls you pretty, princess or a name that’s not yours like Nkechi, Sandra and the likes.
5. You don’t answer and they begin to insult you, calling you ugly.
6. When the seller calls an exorbitant price and you don’t even know where to start bargaining from.
7. You try to price like a pro and the seller insults you, your family, and even generations unborn or just ignores you.
8. When you leave the shop hoping to find it cheaper elsewhere but you don’t and then you return with your shame.
9. When the seller swears its original but you can see fake written all over it.
10. When they call a ridiculous price and you ask for a colour that’s not in existence.
11. When the seller swears he has what you are looking for but doesn’t and then he ends up leaving to get it from his neighbor or second shop as they like to call it.
12. When a dress or shoe is not your size and the seller tries to convince you it will expand.
13. When the seller doesn’t have what you’re looking for and tries to convince you to buy what he has.
14. When another customer wants what you’re buying and attempts to outsmart you by secretly adding more money so the seller does not sell to you.
15. When you get home and notice a part of your bag has been ‘sliced’ and you can’t find your money or phone.
Balogun, Yaba, oil mill, mile 1, every other markets; they are the same. You know you can relate.
