This app splits restaurant checks according to white and male privilege

EquiTable

After a large pizza with friends, the bill comes. Everyone throws in a few bucks to equally split it.

But is that really equal, considering the average woman makes 78% of a man's earnings? If you're a woman of color, the wage gap is even wider: Black women make 64%, and Hispanic women make just 54%.

A new half-joking app, called EquiTable, divides restaurant bills with gender and racial income inequality in mind.

"If I'm working the same job and making less, I started to think, 'Could there be another way of addressing the wage gap?'"  Luna Malbroux, a comic and the app's founder, tells Tech Insider.

Keep scrolling to check out the app, which will be available in the iTunes App Store this month.

EquiTable asks for each person's race and gender to create user profiles. It recommends how much everyone should pay according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

First, users check off in the app who's at the table.
