A’s plans for Sonny Gray, John Axford taking shape, plus injury updates

Manager Bob Melvin said Thursday morning that Gray and John Axford will throw a simulated game on Friday, with Gray going three innings and Axford one.

“He’s comfortable throwing maybe a few less innings than some relievers do,” Melvin said.

Oakland plays at Tempe against the Angels on Thursday, with ex-Giants left-hander Eric Surkamp on the mound.

Stephen Vogt (elbow) and Josh Phegley (shoulder) could get some DH at-bats on Friday.

The home lineup features many regulars in action and through the first six hitters might provide some hints about the regular-season lineup composition.
