– The 2016 edition of the International women’s day was celebrated in Abuja
– Prominent women pledged to continue pushing for gender equality
Women in Nigeria celebrated the 2016 International women’s day at the national women’s centre in Abuja on March 9.
The event was anchored by veteran broadcaster, Moji Makanjuola and was attended by women from different walks of life.
Head of UN missions, Fatma Samoura, Senator Fatimah Raji Rasaki, Grace Ongile UN Women Representative to Nigeria and Ecowas were present at the event.
Honourable minister of women affairs, Aisha Jummai Alhassan host the event and in her remarks delivered a message from the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari to the women.
“Globally women earn 24% less than men, and only 50% of the worlds working age women are in the labour force compared to 75% of men.”
“Women also account for over 60% of the world’s illiterate population, with even higher figures in under-developed countries.”
“Gender equality doesnt mean being “equal” to men. It means having equal rights & opportunites with men in employment, education, etc” she said.

Meanwhile, members of Trade Union Congress (TUC) and National Labour Congress (NLC) are currently staging a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Ikeja Electricity Distributuon Company (IKEDC), Alausa.
The protest is over the lack of security and the sacking of over 500 of their members by the electricity company.
