Ekiti assembly: Senate directs committee to investigate DSS invasion

The Senate on Wednesday, March 9 directed the committee on national security and intelligence to conduct an investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the action of the Department of State Services (DSS).
This followed a motion titled the invasion of Ekiti state house of assembly by armed men of the DSS moved by Biodun Olujimi representing Ekiti south seatori dstrict.
According to her, the hallowed chambers of Ekiti state house of assembly was invaded by armed men of the DSS on Friday, March 4.
She said not minding that various committees of the house were meeting, more than ten DSS men who were armed invaded the complex shooting sporadically in the air thereby causing panic among members.
“At the end of the commotion, four members of the House of Assembly could not be found with news filtering in during the weekend that Hon. Afolabi Akanni, the member representing Efon constituency was abducted and taken to Abuja.
“The senate is worried that the whereabouts of the other three members the reasons for the invasion and abduction of members are still unknown.

“This action is not only constitutional,illegal and unlawful but a lot calculated to harass and embarrass the people of the government,” she said.
She recalled that in September 2015, the Akw-Ibom state government was invaded by armed men of the same DSS without formal explanation and the National Assembly must step in to take action.
Ali Ndume, the Senate leader while making contributions said the motion is coming at a critical time when the senate is supposed to standout.
He said being in a government of change, the lawmakers should be able to stand by the truth
“What happened was wrong and we really need to say it like that but what goes round comes round, what you did in Rivers State and this National Assembly.
“We tried as much as possible because we are government of change if something is wrong we will say is wrong, what happened was not right even though it happened to the right people.

“We have to as this senate tell whoever is involved that this thing was wrong and we have to correct it so that it does not happen again because we are going to be the ones that would be here so we would not allow this thing to happen,” he said.
Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the Senate President asked that the matter be investigated by the committee to be reported in two weeks with comprehensive details.
“If it is true then it is a very serious and unwelcome development and we hope for the interest of our democracy. The senate will wait and let the people submit their report,” said Saraki.
The operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) on Friday, March 4 allegedly invaded the assembly complex in Ekiti state, shooting sporadically and sending everyone into panic.
The house blamed President Muhammadu Buhari and his ruling party of being behind the alleged invasion.
