Zulu king’s palaces set for upgrade
Two royal palaces for King Goodwill Zwelithini are up for renovation as they are apparently not in a monarch-worthy state.
|||Durban - Two royal palaces for King Goodwill Zwelithini are up for renovation as contractors hired are scheduled to meet the monarch later this week.
Responding to the IFP’s Blessed Gwala about the condition of the palaces, Premier Senzo Mchunu said the renovations for the palaces had been considered for some time.
“On Thursday, we will introduce five contractors dealing with renovations at Enyokeni and Khangela palaces,” Mchunu said.
Gwala had complained that the royal palaces were currently not in a monarch-worthy state.
“You can be beaten by snakes in the yard at the palaces,” he said in an apparent reference to overgrown grass. Gwala also said the palaces ought not to look as if they had been abandoned.
But Mchunu said while people have judged the condition of the palaces in their own way, they were nowhere near the description Gwala provided.
“I think His Majesty would be shocked,” he said.
Mchunu said a burnt rondavel at Enyokeni would be built afresh and roofing redone on all the houses at this palace.
He also said the cooling system and coldroom would and the sewerage system in the Angela palace would be upgraded.
He, however, said the leaking roof at the houses at Khangela palace would be delayed.
“Contractors are to start later this month,” Mchunu said. “These are things we committed to do last year so that we keep the palaces at the required level. We will look at other palaces as time goes on,” Mchunu said.
