A total of 380 suspects were arrested during Operation Paseka for various crimes committed in KZN, police said.
|||Durban - Some 380 suspects were arrested during Operation Paseka for various crimes committed in KwaZulu Natal, police said on Wednesday.
SA Police Service spokesperson Major Shooz Magudulela said that suspects were arrested between 26 March and 2 April for crimes including murder, assault, selling liquor without a licence, sexual assault, shoplifting, public drinking and car hijacking.
“Eighty-one suspects were arrested for possession of dagga while a further 81 were arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicating substances,” said Magudulela.
Police said they recovered three cellphones, three motor vehicles, a DVD player, CDs, 15 live rounds of ammunition, 10 knives, unlicensed firearm and a magazine.
“A large quantity of drugs as well as liquor were also seized by police,” said Magudulela.
He added that the operations would continue across the province, while suspects would appear at various magistrates courts.
KwaZulu Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said: “The abuse of alcohol has the potential to lead to more crimes being committed. We will be out in full force and we will not tolerate any criminality committed in our province”.
