‘Too Late’: Detective film is rambunctious fun
“Too Late” relies on a lot of familiar ingredients — detective cliches, film noir tropes, “Pulp Fiction” plot structure, seedy L.A. locations — yet the result is an engaging, rambunctious film with a flavor of its own.
Writer-director Dennis Hauck splits his movie into five distinct, non-linear segments, all shot in single takes — and in 35mm, no less.
The action in the first segment takes place in a park near downtown Los Angeles, where Dorothy’s weird and scary interactions with drug dealers and a ranger set the mystery of her fate in motion.
“Too Late” loses its way during its drive-in set-piece, where the narrative gets fuzzy and things get a little over the top, even for this mischievous film.
