Wisconsin congressman: Voter ID law to help GOP in November
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Republican U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman's comment to a Milwaukee TV station that Wisconsin's newly enacted voter ID law will "make a little bit of a difference" in helping the GOP in November has sparked retorts on social media.
A link to a video of Grothman's comment has been retweeted hundreds of times, with some saying it was a gaffe that shows the law was intended to suppress the Democratic vote, WTMJ-TV reported (http://bit.ly/1VwNMMr ).
Supporters say it prevents fraud, while critics say widespread fraud doesn't exist in Wisconsin and that the law disenfranchises young, poor and minority voters who tend to support Democrats and are less likely to have the mandated forms of identification.
