‘Beautiful by Night’ and live drag at the Roxie
“Beautiful by Night”: James Hosking’s 2014 documentary tribute to the Tenderloin drag-queen palace Aunt Charlie’s Lounge had a sold-out screening at the Tenderloin Museum recently; now Hosking brings his 29-minute film to the Roxie for a special one-night event featuring a live performance by the three main subjects of the film — Donna Personna, Collette LeGrande and Olivia Hart. 7 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Roxie Theater, 3117 16th St., S.F. (415) 863-1087. www.roxie.com.
The annual film festival opens Friday, April 8, with a documentary, “Tibetan Warrior”; an American indie drama, “A Rising Tide”; and a seemingly uncategorizable film from Poland, “The Lure,” about mermaids who become immersed in the Warsaw dance scene of the 1980s.
The ninth annual traveling festival of low-budget films, often made with consumer-accessible equipment, again makes its world debut in San Francisco.
Over four days, there is also a master class on sound design, a two-day weekend workshop on storytelling (and there’s an app for that), and a selection of food films with dinner included.
The event begins, as always, with a opening mixer, a program of competitive shorts and an after-party beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at the Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St., S.F. (415) 621-6120. www.disposablefilm.com.
