Cal’s quarterback competition narrows
Five days until its spring game, Cal’s quarterback competition has narrowed.
During Monday’s practice, the Bears’ final public session before Saturday’s event, sophomore Chase Forrest and redshirt freshman Ross Bowers took the bulk of the snaps.
Dykes has long conceded that, if he notices clear separation at quarterback, he would be willing to name a starter before the spring game.
Webb, who threw for 5,557 yards, 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions in three years with the Red Raiders, will be eligible immediately at his next school after graduating from Texas Tech in May.
Sophomore Evan Rambo, who was behind Rubenzer on the depth chart in 2015, is the leading candidate to replace the graduated Stefan McClure.
The other first-team spot is in question with returning starter Damariay Drew out with a knee injury.
“He just wants to help the team,” Dykes said of Rubenzer’s move back to defense.
For the first time in the Dykes era, the spring game will be more than a glorified practice.
Outside of kickoffs and field goals, though, special teams will be limited.
