Children of war: These photos of kids in Borno state will make you emotional
The extent of damage done by Islamist group, Boko Haram, in Nigeria’s North East region has been downplayed by many because of the lack of documentation from Nigerian government agencies.
Aid worker and photographer, Fati Abubakar is helping to tell the story of Borno state, the worst hit state in the region.

Abubakar is using photos which she titles ‘Bits of Borno,’ to bring attention to the way Borno residents lives in the midst of the crisis.
The photos below are focused on children.

1. Despite the hardship they face, the Borno kids always have a cute smile plastered on their face
2. While some go in search of ‘greener pastures’ themselves…..
3. ….others stay in school to secure a brighter future
4. They study hard during the day….
5. …..and at night with the help of solar lights provided by the Like Minds Project
6. In all, the kids are showing resilience in the face of senseless attacks by Boko Haram
Their stories:
7. ‘My mother dressed me as a woman when the insurgents came to our village and we left our home at 1am’
8. ‘I don’t know where my parents are, whether they died or are some where else after we ran from our village’
9. ‘A metal cut my leg when i was out, but my parents don’t have money to go to the hospital or a local clinic’
10. ‘My eye hurts’
