Bid to name Cape Town street after druglord
A suspected gang boss wants the City of Cape Town to name a street after his uncle, Colin Stanfield, who was a notorious druglord.
|||Cape Town - Alleged 28s gang boss Ralph Stanfield wants to have a street named after his druglord uncle, Colin Stanfield.
Ralph applied to have Zach Crescent in Blue Downs renamed to Colin Stanfield Crescent.
The application was submitted in January by Mr Jean Muanda on behalf of the registered property owner Glomix Housing Brokers CC, represented by Ralph.
Ralph is the nephew of Colin Stanfield - a convicted tax evader, a notorious druglord and leader of the drug cartel The Firm - who died of lung cancer in 2003.
Chairperson for the City of Cape Town’s naming committee Brett Herron said the recommendation is on his committee’s agenda for discussion on Wednesday, but says it will fail.
“This proposal cannot succeed given that it seeks to honour someone who has a criminal conviction and who is so widely regarded as being associated with unlawful conduct,” Herron said.
His committee will recommend that the application be rejected.
“It should also be noted that the proposal does not comply with any of the strategic objectives of the City’s Integrated Development Plan and that the applicant has not provided or supplied proof of any support for the proposal from the surrounding local community as required in terms of Section 7.3 of the naming policy,” Herron added.
